At Maitland Manor, we take extra steps to reduce the ecological impact of our inn.
Eco Efforts at the Inn
- Toiletries – When you stay at Maitland Manor, you’ll notice our toiletries are in paper “bottles” instead of plastic. You’ll still enjoy high end products from Gilchrist & Soames, but we use the BeeKind line. These paper containers will hold up well for your entire stay, but represent a 59% reduction in material by weight, and a 92% reduction in waste space as compared to traditional small plastic bottles. Our purchase of this line also results in financial support for honeybee research and the study of pollinator sustainability. They contain no parabens, phthalates, or artificial colors and are Leaping Bunny certified.
- Instead of providing small, over-packaged bars of soap, you’ll find larger bottles of hand wash and lotion, also part of the Gilchrist & Soames BeeKind line. Rest assured, the bottles and pumps are sanitized between guests.
- The luxurious sheets you’ll sleep on here are from the Comphy Company, a local Washington linen company with a revolutionary product. The sheets are soft, wash well, and dry wrinkle free, but the big impact of these sheets is that they take 30% less energy to dry. While we love the time savings, we especially love the reduced use of electricity. Maybe best of all, the sheets last 2 to 3 times longer than standard cotton sheets, and when it’s time for them to retire, we ship them back to Comphy who send them onto their next life…sometimes as bedding fill for dog and cat beds, provided free of charge to animal shelters! If you love the experience of sleeping on these sheets while you visit, and you like what Comphy stands for, ask us how you can order your own set to have shipped directly to your home.
- Our towels are from Monarch’s Eco Line and also take 30% less energy to dry.
- One of the most important steps we take is to locally source as much of the wonderful food you’ll eat while you’re here. We purchase most of our breakfast meats from Clark Farms in Sequim, the oldest continually owned and operated family farm in the state of Washington. Their commitment to “healthy animals, healthy soil,” humane treatment, and feed with no antibiotics, and no added steroids or hormones, makes Clark Farms an ideal partner for Maitland Manor. These meats just taste better and we think you’ll appreciate the difference. During the summer and fall, almost all of the fruit you’ll eat here is local. We grow our own greens, edible flowers, herbs, blackberries, blueberries, walnuts, and some vegetables right here in our yard. We source the rest from local farms and orchards.
- Drink a smoothie, iced tea, or iced coffee around here and you’ll be given a metal straw to use instead of plastic. Taking it to-go? We’ll use biodegradable cups and covers, along with high-quality paper straws.
- We do provide a Keurig coffee maker in each guest room. Some of the K-Cups we provide, such as the San Francisco French Roast, are provided in recyclable mesh versions. We provide a ceramic waste can near each machine for your coffee and K-Cup waste. We try to recycle as much of that as possible. We also provide wooden coffee sticks instead of plastic.
- Finally, instead of providing plastic bottles of water, we provide each guest with a reusable, aluminum water bottle for use during your stay. Simply return it to the room before you depart and we’ll wash and sanitize it for the next guest. If you take it with you, or you want to purchase a brand new one to take home, we’ll charge the credit card we have on file for $10 plus tax.
- We recycle paper, plastic, and glass to the full extent possible in our county.
